3D is once again taking over Hollywood and preparing to make a move into your home theatre. Apple Computer, a leader in entertainment devices, is preparing to launch a whole new wave of three-dimensional interactive experience.

Apple is in the process of redefining how viewers experience 3D technology by eliminating special glasses and other restrictive head-mounted devices. Apple’s system will be based on holographic 3D objects and will allow the interaction of multiple users.

Diagrams from the patent application filed this week reveal a complex network of projections and light sensors. Perfect for advertising!

Finally! Life 2.0 is an in depth look at Second Life and the character building relationships within the Internet’s largest user-created virtual world community.

Second Life is a 3D virtual online world with users from around the world. Hundreds of thousands of users log on daily and assume their digital alter egos in the form of a 3D avatar. Part fantasy, part escapism the lines between reality and virtual reality are blurred.

Director Jason Spingarn-Koff explores the human interactions of Second Life residents by immersing himself in their virtual worlds. In doing so he creates a character-based drama that forces us to question our own existence.

This feature-length documentary follows a group of people whose lives are dramatically transformed by the virtual world Second Life. They enter a new reality, whose inhabitants assume alternate personas in the form of avatars. The film is foremost an intimate, character-based drama about people who look to a virtual world in search of something they are missing in their real lives. A young woman in Detroit becomes a star designer of virtual clothes and houses; an American and a Canadian fall in love online then struggle to build a real life together; a man creates the avatar of an 11-year-old girl who he believes is an expression of his subconscious. The results are unexpected and often disturbing: reshaping relationships, identities, and ultimately the very notion of reality.

Wow! That is pretty intense. The Avatar movie actually had the opposite effect on me. I’ve been depressed for the last 10 years since I left my career as a 3D animator. Having been immersed in a 3D career for many years I am familiar with the overpowering effects of 3D. Finally though there is a movie that harnesses the power of the 3D medium in a convincing way. Avatar as a movie is a believable immersive experience with an organic look-and-feel. So many 3D movies have presented us with the crisp hard-edges reminiscent of the early toy-based flicks.
